Can anybody recommend a good Bay area body shop? East bay is preferable but i'll travel for quality.

...if price is no matter i'd recommend Chris from "Works Auto Body" in Santa Clara:

i've received quality job from him and you'd consistently see many of his customers bringing nice cars there for repairs (Ferrari, M3, s2k, Porsche etc).

Jim's Autobody is one of the best (IMHO) they have 3 locations

Antioch
Concord
Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek's shop is ran by the son of the original owner - he knows his stuff and is a good guy.

I was about to post a new thread before noticing this one.

A friend was t-boned pretty heavily in his '94. It still drives just fine but the door is demolished, and repairs are estimated at $5000.

Is there a completely cheap body shop somewhere in the bay that would just take a used door and make it functional again, for a minimal cost? Otherwise the car is a total loss.

Minus well salvage it out and buy another one for around that price...maybe add a little more and find a F/I one... Just my 2 cents!

is the door the only thing that is damaged?
if so has he considered buying a door and just replacing the bad door with a used one

I crunched the door and the rocker pannel under it. I got a replacement door for $400 from Mazda Recycling in Sacramento. I moved all my manual stuff over, wasn't too bad. I would have the door on the car but the rocker pannel is too screwed up too let it close.

I hope the rocker pannel isn't too expensive to fix.

To bring this back up again...

I'm leaning toward Classic Auto Body in Walnut Creek, I liked the guy and he gave me the lowest quote. But I have no idea how good the work they do is. If anybody has heard anything good or bad about them I would like to know.

I'd second this recommendation -- I've had Works Auto Body work on both my Miata and my Audi and been very pleased with the work.

While they're not cheap, they're not outrageously expensive either. They beat German Auto Body for a repair job on my Audi last year.
